More often than not, the problem isn't that your hair is falling out - it's that it's snapping in half. That distinction matters, because the two have almost nothing in common.

What is hair breakage?

Hair breakage is a strand snapping somewhere along its length instead of being released from the scalp. The hair is still rooted in the follicle. You've only lost the portion above the break.

To understand why strands snap, it helps to know what one is made of. A hair is essentially a rope of keratin protein - the cortex - wrapped in a protective layer of overlapping scales called the cuticle. The cuticle is the armour. As long as it lies flat and intact, the cortex stays hydrated, flexible, and able to stretch and spring back.

Damage wears that armour away. Once the cuticle is chipped or missing in a spot, the cortex underneath is exposed, dries out, and loses its elasticity. Now everyday stress - brushing, tying it up, a hot styling tool, a cotton pillowcase - is enough to finish the job. The strand snaps at its weakest point.

Which leads to the single most important thing to understand about breakage: hair is not living tissue. It has no blood supply and no capacity to heal. Every bit of damage it accumulates is permanent and cumulative, all the way from your scalp to your ends. The oldest hair - your ends - has had the most time to collect it, which is exactly why breakage almost always starts there.

Hair can't repair itself. Everything sold as "repair" is really reinforcement - useful, temporary, and no substitute for not damaging it in the first place.

Breakage vs. shedding vs. split ends

These three get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Getting this right decides whether you need a dermatologist or just a better hairbrush.

The bulb test is the whole diagnosis. Pick up a few fallen hairs and look closely at the ends. A shed hair carries a tiny pale bulb - the club root that formed as the follicle released it. A broken hair has nothing on either end; it's just a blunt or frayed fragment, and it's usually noticeably shorter than the hair on your head.

Split ends sit in between. A split is breakage in progress: the cuticle has worn through at the tip and the cortex is unravelling into two or more strands. Left alone, splits travel upward along the shaft, which is why trimming them is genuinely preventative rather than cosmetic.

What causes hair breakage

Almost all breakage traces back to four sources, and most people dealing with it have at least two running at once.

1. Mechanical stress

The most common cause, and the most fixable. Brushing dry curly or coily hair, detangling from the roots downward so knots compact instead of releasing, aggressive towel-rubbing, tight elastics, and cotton pillowcases all apply force to strands that can't take it.

Wet hair deserves special mention. When hair absorbs water it swells and its internal hydrogen bonds temporarily break, so it becomes more elastic but considerably weaker. That's why yanking a brush through soaking hair does so much damage - and why detangling with plenty of conditioner for slip matters more than whether the hair is wet or dry.

2. Heat

Damage begins around 300°F / 150°C, and keratin starts to denature outright closer to 420°F / 215°C. Most flat irons run hot enough to do real harm on their highest setting. Repeated heat also drives water out of the cortex, leaving strands stiff and prone to snapping.

3. Chemical processing

Bleach, permanent colour, relaxers and perms all work by deliberately breaking bonds inside the strand and reforming them. That's not a side effect, it's the mechanism. Bleach in particular lifts the cuticle and degrades the cortex, which is why bleached hair is far more fragile and far more porous.

4. Protein and moisture out of balance

This one is misunderstood constantly. Hair needs both, and an excess of either causes breakage:

  • Too little protein (or too much moisture): hair feels limp, mushy, and stretches a long way before snapping. Common in high-porosity and bleached hair.
  • Too much protein (or too little moisture): hair feels stiff, rough and straw-like, and snaps almost immediately with no stretch. Common in people who've been told protein is the answer and overdone it.

The tell is a stretch test: take one wet strand and pull it gently. Healthy hair stretches a little and springs back. Mushy, endless stretch means you need protein. No stretch and an instant snap means you need moisture, not more protein.

Working out where yours comes from

Breakage leaves a pattern, and the pattern points at the cause.

  • Short broken pieces all over your parting and crown - usually heat and mechanical damage from styling and brushing the same spot daily.
  • A halo of short frizzy pieces around the hairline - tension from tight styles, or friction from headwear and pillowcases.
  • Breakage concentrated at one horizontal line - almost always where a hair tie sits every day.
  • Ends fraying and thinning while roots look fine - accumulated damage; the hair is old and needs trimming.
  • Snapping right where colour was applied - chemical damage; stop processing and rebuild.
  • Breakage everywhere, hair feels straw-like - protein overload or severe dryness. Do the stretch test.

Your porosity and hair type both change how vulnerable you are. High-porosity hair has a compromised cuticle to begin with, so it loses moisture fast and breaks more easily. Tightly coiled type 4 hair is the most fragile of all, because every tight bend in the strand is a natural weak point.

How to treat hair breakage

You can't rejoin a snapped strand. What you can do is stop the breakage continuing and reinforce what's still on your head.

Fix the balance first

Run the stretch test before buying anything. If hair is mushy and over-elastic, use a protein or bond-repair treatment. If it's stiff and snaps instantly, use a deep conditioner or moisture mask and leave protein alone for a few weeks. Getting this backwards is the single most common way people make breakage worse.

Use protein correctly

Hydrolysed proteins - keratin, wheat, rice, silk - are small enough to sit in the gaps of a damaged cuticle and temporarily patch it. They work. But they're a splint, not a cure, and they wash out. Most people need a protein treatment every 4 to 6 weeks, not weekly. Bleached or high-porosity hair may want it more often; low-porosity hair usually needs it far less.

Bond builders

Bond-building treatments target the disulfide bonds inside the cortex that bleaching and relaxing break. They're the closest thing to genuine repair that exists, and they're genuinely useful for chemically damaged hair. They still don't make hair permanently new - the effect is real but finite.

Condition properly

Every wash. Conditioner reduces the friction between strands, which is where a great deal of mechanical breakage actually happens. The active ingredients doing that work are conditioning quats like behentrimonium methosulfate, which carry a positive charge and bind to the damaged, negatively charged spots on a cuticle - meaning they deposit exactly where the damage is.

Trim

Unglamorous and unavoidable. Split ends migrate upward, so a strand with a split will keep breaking higher and higher until it's cut. Small regular trims lose you less length overall than waiting until the damage is dramatic.

How to prevent it coming back

Treatment buys you time. Handling is what actually decides whether breakage returns.

  • Detangle from the ends upward, in sections, with plenty of conditioner or detangler for slip. Never start at the roots - it compacts every knot on the way down. This is the highest-value habit change on this list.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb or a flexible detangling brush, not a fine bristle brush on wet or textured hair.
  • Blot, don't rub. Swap terry towels for a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt - the same change that helps frizz, for the same reason.
  • Drop the heat setting and always use a heat protectant. Air-dry when you can; most people's "necessary" temperature is well above what they actually need.
  • Loosen your styles. Spiral or fabric-covered hair ties, no elastic in the same spot daily, and nothing that pulls at the hairline.
  • Sleep on satin or silk, or in a bonnet. Cotton wicks moisture out of hair and creates friction all night.
  • Eat enough protein and iron. Hair is built from protein, and iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional causes of weak hair - especially in menstruating women.

One evidence-based extra: coconut oil is unusual among oils in that its main fatty acid penetrates the hair shaft rather than just coating it, and it has been shown to reduce protein loss when used as a pre-wash treatment. Applied before shampooing, it's a genuinely useful preventative for breakage-prone hair.

Shampoo and products for breakage

No shampoo repairs broken hair, and any that claims to is overselling. What a good one does is stop making things worse - which matters more than it sounds, because breakage is cumulative.

What to look for

  • Gentle cleansers. Cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoyl isethionate or coco-glucoside instead of sulfates high in the list.
  • Conditioning quats in the conditioner - behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium chloride. These do the real anti-friction work.
  • Hydrolysed proteins - only if your stretch test said you need them.
  • Fatty alcohols (cetyl, cetearyl) and humectants for softness and slip.

What to be careful with

  • Sulfates as a daily driver. Effective cleansers, but they strip the oils that keep the cuticle flat.
  • Protein in every single product. The fastest route to brittle, snapping hair is stacking a protein shampoo, protein conditioner, protein leave-in and weekly protein mask.
  • Drying alcohols near the top of an ingredient list - alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol.
  • "Strengthening" as a claim. It's a marketing word with no fixed meaning. Read the actual ingredients.

And match products to your porosity, not just to the word "breakage". Low-porosity hair is easily overloaded and does badly with heavy protein; high-porosity hair drinks up rich products and needs sealing most.
